Understanding the Key Stages (KS)

British Primary School Structure

In the UK, Primary Schools typically operate from September to the following July. The academic year is structured around this timeline, offering various terms and breaks along the way.

Primary Education is divided into key stages, specifically Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2).  Each key stage builds upon the last, ensuring students acquire essential skills before advancing in their education. Progress is assessed through formal evaluations at the end of KS1 and KS2. The English National Curriculum that students follow is organised into year groups known as Key Stages.

ETIA Academy is an online school that follows the British National Curriculum. This curriculum provides quality education in subjects including math, science, and English. By using this curriculum, ETIA Academy ensures students receive effective education similar to traditional UK schools.

Our classes are organised into key stages to enhance the learning process. Each key stage is tailored to specific age groups and developmental milestones, allowing for targeted teaching methods and curriculum that suit the needs of students at different levels.

We strive to create a learning environment that is inclusive, collaborative, and supportive. We recognise that every individual has unique talents and strengths, and we aim to help our students discover and develop their full potential.

This structured approach helps ensure that learners receive appropriate guidance and support as they progress through their educational journey.

Benefits of Key Stages

  • Developmental Fit: Key stages better match children's growth, allowing teachers to provide tailored challenges and support.

  • Personalised Learning: This grouping enables teachers to create lessons that address different skill levels, helping each child thrive.

  • Pace of Learning: Students can learn at their own speed, keeping advanced learners engaged while giving others the time they need.

  • Peer Interaction: Mixing age groups fosters collaboration, allowing older students to support younger peers and build social skills.

  • Holistic Assessment: Assessments in key stages focus on overall progress, helping teachers identify areas needing support.

  • Less Pressure: This approach reduces stress around age-specific goals, creating a friendly environment for mastering skills.

  • Aligned Curriculum: It facilitates smooth transitions between stages, as lessons build on prior knowledge.  8

  • Sense of Community: Learning with different ages fosters a sense of belonging that supports emotional growth.

  • In summary, using key stages at ETIA Academy creates a supportive and effective environment that meets the diverse needs of all students.
