Year 2 Curriculum Overview
A clear, parent-friendly overview of typical Year 2 subjects in the British National Curriculum—plus how ETIA Academy brings them together through flexible, project-based learning.
Important note for home-educating families
This page is a general guide to typical Year 2 subject areas and learning goals. Home education in the UK is flexible, and children progress at different rates. If you’re comparing against statutory guidance, you can review the National Curriculum programmes of study on GOV.UK.

ETIA Academy approach
ETIA Academy Academic Curriculum
Our curriculum is built around 12 project-based modules that integrate core skills (English and Maths) with Science, Humanities, Computing, PSHE and life skills. Children learn through purposeful projects—so knowledge sticks, confidence grows, and learning feels meaningful rather than pressured.
How this works in practice
A few common questions from families using a flexible, project-based approach.
How does Year 2 content fit into ETIA Academy modules?
Each module weaves Year 2-appropriate skills into the project tasks—reading, writing, maths practice, research, and hands-on activities—so subjects are covered naturally while working toward a meaningful outcome.
Do we have to follow the National Curriculum exactly?
For home education, there’s flexibility in how you teach and in what order. Many families use the National Curriculum as a reference. Our programmes are designed to be aligned while remaining calm, flexible and child-centred.
What if my child is working above or below Year 2 level?
That’s completely normal. Our pathway is self-paced, so you can adapt the level of challenge—simplify a task, extend it, or spend longer where needed—without the pressure of keeping up with a class timetable.
How much time does a module take?
It varies by child and by how often you study. Many families spread a module over several weeks, dipping in little-and-often, and returning to tasks when it suits their routine.
What support do parents need to provide?
Parents act as a supportive guide—helping with materials, discussing ideas, and encouraging reflection. The learning is designed to be clear and structured, without requiring parents to be subject experts.
How do you cover PSHE/RSHE?
PSHE/RSHE themes are built into projects through age-appropriate discussions and activities—friendships, feelings, online safety, healthy routines, and respectful communication—so children practise skills in real contexts.
